Liar's Bar as a drinking game
The bluffing in Liar's Bar makes a very good drinking game: you keep the cards and the “Liar!”, and you replace the revolver with sips. Here are simple, balanced rules, and an alcohol-free version.
- 3–10adult players
- 5cards each
- 0revolver
Adults only. Excessive drinking is harmful to your health. Nobody has to drink alcohol, and nobody drives after the game.
What you need
- Standard playing cards: Aces, Kings, Queens and a few Jokers.
- A drink per player, with or without alcohol, as each one prefers.
- Water on the table.
- A phone with MhyTom's Last Call mode, which draws the table card and counts the sips for you.
The rules
- Sit in a circle and deal 5 cards to each player.
- A table card is drawn at random: Ace, King or Queen.
- On your turn, play 1 or more cards face down and announce them as the table card. You can lie.
- The next player believes you, or shouts “Liar!”. Either way, someone drinks.
Who drinks, and how much?
It all depends on the number of cards played. Let's call that number N.
| What happens | Who drinks |
|---|---|
| The next player believes you | The next player drinks N sips |
| “Liar!” and you had lied | You drink 2 × N sips |
| “Liar!” but you told the truth | The player who accused you drinks 2 × N sips |
Example: Tom plays 2 cards. Lea believes him: she drinks 2 sips. If she shouts “Liar!” and Tom lied, Tom drinks 4 sips. If he told the truth, Lea drinks 4.
The Joker always counts as the right card. After a “Liar!”, the cards are dealt again and a new table card is drawn. Whoever just drank starts the next round.
Why these rules work well
- Believing is cheap, being wrong costs double. Accusing is never free, so you think before you shout.
- Playing many cards raises the stakes for everyone, including you.
- Nobody is eliminated. Everyone stays at the table until the end, which suits a party better than Russian roulette.
Keeping it sensible
- A limit per player. In Last Call it is 15 sips by default: when a player reaches it, they switch to water.
- Water breaks. The app suggests them regularly for the whole table: take them.
- An ending you decide together. When you stop, the player who drank the least is declared the most sober of the night, and wins.
The alcohol-free version
Replace the sips with points. The rules do not change: whoever believes a liar takes N points, whoever is wrong takes double. At the end, the player with the fewest points wins. In Last Call, just pick “Points” instead of “Sips”.
Last Call counts the sips or the points for you.
Open Last CallFrequently asked questions
How many sips do you drink when you get caught lying?
Twice the number of cards played. With 2 cards played, the liar drinks 4 sips.
Can you play the Liar's Bar drinking game without alcohol?
Yes. You count points instead of sips, and the player with the fewest wins. MhyTom's Last Call mode has this option.
Is there Russian roulette in the drinking game version?
No. In Last Call there is no gun and nobody is eliminated: every mistake is paid in sips or points.
How many players can play?
3 to 10 players, all adults if there is alcohol.
