What do you need to play Liar's Bar without the video game?
No need for a computer or to buy the game: Liar's Bar plays very well with what you already have at home. Here is the exact list, and how many decks of cards to plan for your number of players.
- 2decks of cards for 4
- 1phone
- 0 €to spend
The full list
- Ordinary 54-card decks. You only keep the Aces, Kings, Queens and Jokers.
- A phone with mhytom.be, which draws the table card and replaces the revolver.
- A table and 3 to 10 players.
That's it. There is nothing to print and nothing to install: MhyTom opens in the browser, for free and with no sign-up.
How many decks of cards do you need?
A 54-card deck has 4 Aces, 4 Kings, 4 Queens and 2 Jokers. But you need more than 4 cards of each rank from 3 players up: so a single deck is never enough.
| Players | Aces, Kings and Queens | Jokers | 54-card decks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5 of each | 0 | 2 |
| 4 | 6 of each | 2 | 2 |
| 5 | 7 of each | 4 | 2 |
| 6 | 9 of each | 3 | 3 |
| 7 | 10 of each | 5 | 3 |
| 8 | 12 of each | 4 | 3 |
| 9 | 13 of each | 6 | 4 |
| 10 | 15 of each | 5 | 4 |
You don't have to remember this table: when you enter the number of players in MhyTom, the app shows the cards to prepare.
Decks with different backs: is that a problem?
Yes, a little. If the backs are not identical, an observant player can spot which deck a card comes from and guess what it is. Two simple fixes:
- buy two identical decks, same brand and same colour;
- failing that, mix the decks well before sorting the cards, so that each rank comes from several decks.
What can replace the revolver?
In the video game, the loser of an accusation plays Russian roulette. In real life, you need a random draw whose risk goes up with every shot. A few ideas go around: a six-sided die, cups, slips of paper in a hat. They work, but you have to recount everything by hand for each player.
The simplest option is a virtual cylinder. MhyTom gives each player their own gun, with 6 chambers and one bullet, remembers how many times each one has shot and announces the winner. The phone's sound and vibration do the rest. No real object is needed, and there is no danger.
And for the variants?
The Devil and Chaos modes use special cards. With standard playing cards, replace them like this:
| Special card | Mode | Replaced by |
|---|---|---|
| Devil | Devil | A marked Ace (a sticker is enough) |
| Murder | Chaos | Aces (Chaos mode does not use Aces) |
| Chaos | Chaos | Jokers |
A real MhyTom card game, with these special cards fully illustrated, is in the works.
Your cards are ready? The app takes care of the rest.
