How to play Liar's Bar in real life

You loved the Liar's Bar video game and want to play it around a real table, with your friends? Good news: all you need is standard playing cards and a phone. Here is how, step by step.

What is Liar's Bar?

Liar's Bar is a multiplayer video game set in a rather shady bar. In its card mode, each player plays cards face down, claiming they match the table card. They are allowed to lie. If the next player calls them a liar and they really did lie, they have to play Russian roulette. The last survivor wins.

The idea is so simple that it works very well in real life. Only one thing is missing: someone to pick the table card, and a gun… a virtual one, of course. That is exactly what MhyTom does.

What you need

In the video game, the deck has 20 cards for 4 players: 6 Kings, 6 Queens, 6 Aces and 2 Jokers. For a different number of players, adjust the deck:

PlayersKings, Queens and AcesJokers
35 of each0
46 of each2
57 of each4
69 of each3
812 of each4
1015 of each5

A single 54-card deck only has 4 cards of each rank: from 3 players up, mix two decks or more.

The rules, step by step

  1. Deal 5 cards to each player. Everyone keeps their cards secret.
  2. On MhyTom, tap Reveal the table: the app draws the table card at random (Ace, King or Queen).
  3. On your turn, play 1 or more cards face down and announce them as the table card: “Two Kings!”. You can lie.
  4. The next player chooses: believe you and play, or shout “Liar!”.
  5. The cards are flipped. If you lied, you shoot. If you told the truth, the player who accused you shoots. The Joker always counts as the right card.
  6. After each shot, the cards are collected and dealt again, and a new table is revealed. The last one alive wins.

Russian roulette, with no danger at all

The MhyTom gun is entirely virtual. Each player has their own cylinder with 6 chambers and a single bullet: on the first shot the risk is 1 in 6, then it goes up with every shot. The sixth one is the end. The phone spins the cylinder, with sound and a vibration: the suspense is real, the danger is zero.

Variants to spice up the game

Devil: the card that makes everyone shoot

Devil mode adds a Devil card. If someone calls the player who played it a liar and reveals it, all the other players have to shoot.

Chaos: Murder and Chaos

Chaos mode is played with 3 cards in hand, Kings and Queens only, and two special cards: the Murder card, which eliminates a player of your choice, and the Chaos card, where everyone chooses who has to shoot.

5 tips to bluff better

  1. Don't lie every turn. A bluff is only believable if you often tell the truth.
  2. Keep the same pace. Hesitating before you announce gives you away.
  3. Count the cards. If 5 Kings out of 6 have already been played, the next “Three Kings!” is suspicious.
  4. Watch the guns. A player already at 4 shots will avoid taking risks: use it.
  5. Keep your Joker for the moment you have nothing good left in hand.
